Breaking the Silence: Confronting Gender-Based Violence in Kenya
By Her Impact Hub
In Kenya and across the globe, gender-based violence (GBV) remains one of the most pervasive yet underreported human rights violations. From physical abuse and sexual assault to emotional manipulation and economic deprivation, GBV takes many forms all rooted in power imbalances and deeply entrenched gender norms.
At Her Impact Hub, we believe that tackling GBV requires more than just awareness. It demands collective action, survivor-centered support, and inclusive policies that protect and empower women and girls.
The Harsh Reality
According to the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS), 1 in 3 women in Kenya has experienced physical violence, and 1 in 5 has faced sexual violence. The numbers are even higher among women in rural areas and informal settlements, where access to support services is limited. But statistics alone cannot capture the trauma, silence, and societal shame many survivors carry. GBV is not just a “women’s issue” it’s a national crisis that affects communities, economies, and future generations.
Why It Persists ?
- Cultural norms and stigma often discourage survivors from speaking out.
- Weak enforcement of laws means perpetrators go unpunished.
- Limited access to justice and shelters leaves many women with no safe exit.
- Economic dependence traps survivors in abusive situations.

Our Response: A Multi-Level Approach
-
Awareness & Education:
We organize community forums, school-based dialogues, and media campaigns to challenge harmful norms and encourage open conversations. -
Survivor Support:
We connect survivors with legal aid, trauma counseling, safe spaces, and economic empowerment programs. -
Advocacy & Policy Influence:
We engage with local leaders and national policymakers to strengthen legal frameworks, increase funding for GBV prevention, and ensure survivor-centered justice.
Stories of Strength
We’ve witnessed young girls escape forced marriages, women find the courage to report abuse for the first time, and entire villages commit to ending FGM and early marriage. These victories are powerful reminders: change is possible when we stand together.
